The initiative seeks to develop high-impact solutions for shipbuilding, promoting dual-use innovation with applications in both defense and the civilian sector.
The Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile) and Know Hub Chile announced an extension of the application deadline for the new edition of Desafío Avante, an open innovation program aimed at startups and science- and technology-based ventures. The initiative seeks to develop high-impact solutions for shipbuilding, promoting dual-use innovation with applications in both defense and the civilian sector. The selected startups will receive up to CLP 35 million in funding, specialized mentoring and the chance to validate their solutions at the Asmar shipyards, the country’s main shipbuilding center. They will also gain access to strategic industry networks and the opportunity to carry out a soft landing in the United States or Colombia, depending on their scaling needs. “Desafío Avante 04 is a unique opportunity for startups with emerging technologies to test their solutions in a real environment, with the backing of the Chilean Navy and the shipbuilding industry. We want to foster public-private collaboration and support the development of technologies with global impact,” said Francisca Lema, head of Plans at CITA. Key innovation areas The program invites startups to submit solutions in three major areas: Sustainable Shipbuilding: technologies that reduce environmental impact and improve the energy efficiency of ships. Automation and Optimization: development of automated systems to improve vessel assembly and maintenance. Advanced Manufacturing: new lightweight, strong and durable materials for shipbuilding.
Dual-use innovation and growth in the naval sector
Since its first edition in 2019, Desafío Avante has been a pillar in consolidating dual-use innovation in Chile. It has driven initiatives such as Fortis (Lockheed Martin exoskeletons) and Proa I+D, strengthening collaboration among startups, universities and research centers. Héctor Cifuentes, innovation coordinator at Know Hub Chile, noted that “this program is a great opportunity for startups with science- and technology-based developments, allowing them to validate and scale solutions that can transform the Chilean shipbuilding industry and reach international markets.” The application period closes on March 13, 2025.
