The program seeks to attract innovative science- and technology-based proposals. Applications will be open until March 6, 2025.
On November 29, at the close of Innovapolinav, the 2024 Innovation Meeting of the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile), the launch of the Desafío Avante 04 program was announced. The project, driven by the Chilean Navy’s Technological Innovation Center (CITA) in collaboration with Know Hub Chile, seeks to attract innovative science- and technology-based proposals, with applications open until March 6, 2025.
Since its creation in 2020, this initiative has encouraged entrepreneurship in areas that are key for the Navy, with the aim of modernizing its capabilities and providing solutions with dual impact, useful for both military and civilian purposes. In the words of Lieutenant Francisca Lema, Head of Plans at CITA, the competition “opened the doors of the institution to entrepreneurs, who thanks to their ingenuity and technological capabilities have been able to better understand and address the sector’s problems.”
What’s new in this edition
Taky Parvex, senior innovation manager at Know Hub Chile, highlighted a change in this new edition of the program. “AVANTE 04 no longer focuses on a specific Navy problem, but on a strategic industry for the country: shipbuilding and the maritime sector. This has allowed us to bring in a range of organizations, institutions and companies as collaborators, broadening the scope of the challenge,” he said.
The program has the backing of leading academic players, such as the Valparaíso Scientific and Technological Center (CCTVAL) and the Advanced Center for Electrical and Electronic Engineering (AC3E) at Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María, as well as the OPEN Beauchef innovation environment at Universidad de Chile and the Naval Engineering Institute at Universidad Austral.
From the naval and maritime industry, participants include the National Shipowners Association (ANA), ARMASUR, the ASMAR and ASENAV shipyards, and defense companies such as SISDEF and DTS. The Navy’s Research and Development Programs Directorate (DIPRIDA) has also joined, consolidating a robust interdisciplinary collaboration network.
Those interested in taking part in this initiative can find the rules and specific challenges at www.desafioavante.cl. The program is a unique opportunity to contribute to the country’s technological development, with an innovative approach that brings together academia, industry and the Chilean Navy.
