The challenges in this edition are sustainable shipbuilding, automation and optimization, and advanced manufacturing

The teams selected for Desafío Avante 04, organized by the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile) and Know Hub Chile, took part in a bootcamp held at the Talcahuano industrial plant of Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada (Asmar), where they learned about the shipbuilding capabilities of this Strategic Defense Company.

Avante 04, as reported by Infodefensa.com, is an open innovation initiative focused on solving naval problems through science- and technology-based ventures that also have potential applications in the civilian sphere. The challenge was first held in 2020 and helps strengthen the national research, development and innovation ecosystem.

According to Know Hub Chile, the teams Arrocorp, Austral Technik, Bosses Industry, CyT Software e Ingeniería SpA, lalink Technology SpA, Mafico, Mine Analytics, Moderniza Consulting Data SpA and Rudanac Biotec toured the Asmar Talcahuano facilities as part of the Dual Hub Summit 2025, held at the Universidad del Biobío.

The working session, led by Know Hub Chile senior Innovation manager Taky Parvex and First Lieutenant Juan Segura of the Navy’s Technological Innovation Center (CITA), was an opportunity for learning and exchange that allowed the participating teams to strengthen their proposals and connect directly with the naval industry represented by Asmar.

Modernizing shipbuilding

Desafío Avante 04 seeks to drive the creation of science and technology ventures that contribute to the modernization of shipbuilding, developing solutions in areas such as automation, sustainability, robotics and advanced materials technology, among others.

This initiative, part of a strategic vision to position Chile as a benchmark in shipbuilding and technological innovation, supports the maturation of science- and technology-based ventures, focusing on validation and on developing a business model that allows them to accelerate their market entry.

Avante 04 also contributes to developing solutions that can strengthen the national shipbuilding industry, improving its international competitiveness, and will promote the creation of innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems related to the shipping industry, fostering sustainable and decentralized development.

In this edition, the challenges are sustainable shipbuilding, which seeks innovations that reduce the environmental impact of shipbuilding and increase the energy efficiency of vessels; automation and optimization, which calls for solutions that reduce costs and improve productivity in shipbuilding projects; and advanced manufacturing, to build units that are more durable, stronger and easier to maintain, and that improve safety in the industry.

The two winning teams will each receive CLP 35 million to develop their technology solution. They will also have the opportunity of a softlanding stage in the United States or Colombia, according to their needs. The selected projects will receive mentoring from experts in the naval industry, innovation and technology, and will have the opportunity to test and validate their technology solutions at the Asmar shipyards, the most important shipbuilding center in Chile.
