The initiative, driven by the Chilean Navy’s Technological Innovation Center (CITA) and Know Hub Chile, has become a benchmark for solving strategic challenges through dual-use innovation.

Santiago. On August 5, as part of the Dual Hub Summit, the awards ceremony for the fourth edition of Desafío Avante was held. The initiative, driven by the Technological Innovation Center (CITA) of the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile) and Know Hub Chile, aims to promote dual-use innovation to solve high-impact technological challenges in the maritime domain with potential for civilian application.

Desafío Avante has established itself as one of the most robust dual-use innovation models in Chile, bringing together national scientific and technological capabilities to respond to strategic needs. This cross-sector collaboration platform connects entrepreneurial teams, universities, research and development (R&D) centers and end users, who work together from early stages to develop solutions with high implementation potential.

In its fourth edition, the focus was on the shipbuilding industry, a key sector for the country’s technological autonomy, with an emphasis on sustainable shipbuilding, process automation and optimization, and advanced manufacturing.

Lieutenant Francisca Lema, of the Chilean Navy’s Technological Innovation Center, noted that most of the program’s solutions have gone beyond the naval domain, generating impact in sectors such as health, mining and logistics. “Collaboration between civilian and military actors, structured through dual-use innovation processes, drives the development of new technologies,” she said.

Likewise, Know Hub Chile’s Senior Innovation Manager, Taky Parvex, praised this interagency model for technological innovation and problem-solving. “We hope this model can be replicated to keep tackling major challenges and contribute to the country’s scientific, technological and productive development,” he concluded.

During the ceremony, the three winning teams of this edition were recognized: “Mine Analytics,” “Centro de Innovación Moderniza” and “Bosses,” who will receive funding to develop and validate functional prototypes, with the aim of making useful technologies available to the shipbuilding industry.

In addition, the significant contribution of the Avante Collaborators Network was recognized. The network is made up of ASMAR, DIPRIDA, DTS, OpenBeauchef, Universidad Austral de Chile, the Centro Científico Tecnológico de Valparaíso (CCTVal), the Centro de Innovación y Diseño Avanzado (CINNDA) and the Asociación Nacional de Armadores (ANA), whose commitment has been essential in consolidating Avante as a benchmark for dual-use innovation in the country.

The Chilean Navy reaffirms its commitment to innovation and technological development, fostering collaboration among the public, private and academic sectors to strengthen the country’s strategic capabilities in the maritime domain.
