Dear Editor,
On World Intellectual Property Day, it is key to highlight its potential as a development tool for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which, according to the World Bank, account for about 90% of businesses worldwide, generate more than 50% of global employment and contribute around 40% of GDP in emerging economies. Chile is no exception: SMEs are the heart of our economy and of the regional productive fabric.
In this context, intellectual property should not be seen merely as a formality or a barrier, but as a concrete strategy to grow, obtain financing, stand out and access new markets. SMEs that protect their assets—trademarks, designs, patents or trade secrets—strengthen their competitiveness, increase their value and open up opportunities for collaboration.
Promoting the use of IP among Chilean SMEs is a direct path to fostering development that is more innovative, sustainable and internationally oriented.
