The session covered the legal aspects, the processes involved and why it is a relevant issue to consider

The Know Hub Chile corporation gave a talk titled Intellectual Property as a Critical Factor in the Defense Industry at the facilities of the Compañía de Ingeniería de Sistemas y Desarrollos Funcionales Limitada (Sisdef).

According to Know Hub Chile, the session was led by the corporation’s executive director, Javier Ramírez, and its innovation coordinator, Jovanka Trebotich, and was attended by members of Sisdef’s commercial and development teams, headed by its general manager, Francisco Hederra.

The talk at Sisdef, a subsidiary of Astilleros y Maestranzas de la Armada (Asmar) with more than 40 years of experience developing systems engineering solutions applied mainly to defense and security, covered the legal aspects of intellectual property, the processes involved and why it is a relevant issue.

The session at Sisdef, Javier Ramírez explained, is part of a series of activities aimed at systematic collaboration between defense and the ecosystem. In that context, “it is one more step in providing innovation tools to the local defense industry, enabling it to better take on the challenges this collaboration entails,” he said.

“Strategic defense companies need sophisticated innovation tools, and intellectual property management is one of them. And Know Hub Chile is there to support them,” Ramírez said.

Innovation

Know Hub Chile is a nonprofit corporation made up of a group of universities, science and technology centers and other institutions, whose purpose is to support the country’s development toward a knowledge-based society and economy, working with the different players in the national ecosystem to turn science and technology into innovation.

One of the most influential players in the innovation ecosystem, given its weight and reach, is Defense. Investment in research and development in this field offers numerous examples of positive externalities; however, in Chile, collaboration between military institutions and universities has been sporadic.

The corporation set itself the goal of bringing the Defense sector into the innovation ecosystem and began working with the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile) to design and run the Desafío Avante, an open innovation initiative launched in 2020 that seeks to solve naval problems through science- and technology-based ventures with potential civilian applications.

In 2023, Know Hub Chile and the Chilean Navy launched the Proa I+D program, which seeks to promote applied research using the Navy’s testing, piloting and project validation capabilities. In this way, new horizons are explored and an environment of innovation and progress is fostered that benefits society as a whole.

At the end of 2023, the corporation was selected by the Corporación de Fomento de la Producción (Corfo) to support the design and strategic plan for creating the Public Technology Institute (ITP) for Defense Innovation of Chile. The new institution will contribute to systematic collaboration between defense and the national Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation ecosystem.
