The acceleration program for science- and technology-based ventures, Know Hub Ignition 04, is in the final phase of its call, with a registration deadline of July 16. This initiative, supported from the outset by Tecnológico de Monterrey, has an investment of USD 140,000 for the development of innovative projects.
Know Hub Ignition 04, present in Mexico for the first time, opens its doors to participants from all of Latin America. Its goal is to increase the number and reach of technology businesses derived from research and development (R&D) at universities and research centers. The initiative seeks to strengthen the business fabric through the support of mentors from Chile and Mexico, focusing on value proposition in the science and technology sector.
How these initiatives help investment in science and technology projects in Mexico
The importance of this call, an initiative of the organization Know Hub Chile, lies in its ability to project a promising and transformative future for innovative science ventures that drive the development of society and governments. In previous editions, more than 140 teams have taken part in this program, which faces the challenge of consolidating a knowledge-based economy and the global growth of science-based startups (EBCTs).
According to the latest Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2022-2023 report, produced by researchers at Tec de Monterrey’s EGADE Business School, there are around 8.6 million entrepreneurs in Mexico, many of whom are seeking support for their projects. However, Mexico’s entrepreneurial ecosystem faces challenges such as lack of access to financing, difficulties in starting a business and limited business education.
In 2024, Mexico plans to invest 148 billion pesos in science and technology, a 15.5% increase over the previous year, according to the Ministry of Finance. However, this figure is still insufficient. Mexico currently allocates approximately 0.42% of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to science, technology and innovation activities, well below the 1.5% suggested by organizations such as UNESCO and the OECD
This insufficient public and private investment highlights the need to strengthen scientific and technological communities, improve links between academia and the public and productive sectors, and increase the global competitiveness of Mexican science. Mexican universities play a crucial role in promoting international collaboration in science and technology, strengthening ties with foreign institutions and the capabilities of the local scientific community.
Javier Ramírez, executive director of Know Hub Chile, said the program has proven to be an effective tool for strengthening science and turning it into innovation. “This time we will use that knowledge, experience and networks to expand our search to Colombia and Mexico.”
“The call to take part in Know Hub Ignition 04 is a unique opportunity for multidisciplinary projects by entrepreneurs, researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs and other professionals linked to research and development institutions in the region. This program is designed to boost investment in science and technology ventures in Mexico, contributing significantly to the country’s progress,” Javier Ramírez concludes.
