Dear Editor:

Chile is no stranger to disasters, whether natural or caused by human activity. Technology plays a crucial role in preventing and managing them. Around the world there are early warning systems for earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions that flag the risk. The same goes for drones, satellites, geographic information systems and communication networks, which monitor and assess damage, facilitating rescue and recovery.

Chile has the opportunity to create these solutions with tech startups: emerging companies developing advances for disaster and post-disaster management using artificial intelligence, big data analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT), drones, geographic information systems and real-time communication platforms.

They lessen the impact of these events on communities, society and the environment. They are turning Chile into a knowledge-based society and a resilient country, thanks to its experience and advanced human capital.
