On the afternoons of Wednesday, November 18 and Thursday, November 19, we will answer all questions about this open innovation challenge, which seeks science- and technology-based solutions for detecting illegal fishing, illegal landings, anomalous behavior and non-cooperative vessels. Those interested must register.
Desafío Avante 2020 is an open innovation initiative of the Chilean Navy (Armada de Chile) that, as its name suggests, connects the institution’s challenges in Maritime Domain Awareness (Conciencia Situacional Marítima, MDA) with national scientific and technological capabilities (see the challenges below).
The call is open to researchers, undergraduate and graduate students, and entrepreneurs. Eight teams will be selected and will have access to up to USD 60,000 in total (USD 7,500 per team), while the two winners will have access to up to USD 90,000 (USD 50,000 for first place and USD 40,000 for second).
Desafío Avante 2020 will run through Know Hub Chile’s Dual Tech program: the selected teams will take part in a training program on developing dual-use technologies (10 weeks, between January and March). During this process they will be guided by mentors and must build a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). They will also receive company setup support to form or mature their venture (corporate legal and tax structure, team building, intellectual property strategy, among others).
All teams will take part in a pitch at the end of March 2021, where the two winners will be chosen and will access up to USD 90,000 in total. The funds are to implement the roadmap, create and/or strengthen the venture and, in general, carry out the activities needed to implement and commercialize the technological solutions.
In this first edition, the challenges to be solved fall into four specific detection areas:
- Illegal landings on the country’s northern coast. Q&A event on Nov 18 from 14:30 to 16:30, register here.
- Illegal fishing in Chilean jurisdictional waters, in order to obtain evidence to be presented to the competent judicial bodies. Q&A event on Nov 18 from 17:00 to 19:00, register here.
- Anomalous behavior of ships and vessels transiting the maritime areas under national responsibility. Q&A event on Nov 19 from 14:30 to 16:30, register here.
- Non-cooperative vessels. Q&A event on Nov 19 from 17:00 to 19:00, register here.
In addition, a fifth open area covers any technological challenges related to Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) that may not fall within the areas above.
