Adapting a global exoskeleton to local work sites

FORTIS is a lightweight, unpowered exoskeleton developed in the United States by Lockheed Martin to assist with heavy lifting tasks. What was missing was the biomechanical analysis and ergonomic adaptation to make it useful for work in Chile.

Co-designing a challenge won by regional science

Know Hub Chile co-designed the Fortis Challenge. It was awarded to the multidisciplinary team at the LeufüLab Laboratory of Universidad Austral de Chile (UACh), which brought together engineering, kinesiology and medicine capabilities.

Challenge results

Technical validation, knowledge transfer and regional science at the technology frontier.

  • 01

    Technical validation of the device

Industrial use in the forestry and aquaculture sectors and at ASMAR shipyards, and healthcare use in emergency care and patient transport.

  • 02

    Knowledge transfer

Direct interaction between Chilean students and scientists and a cutting-edge Lockheed Martin development.

  • 03

    Regional science at the frontier

Southern Chile proved it has the infrastructure and talent to co-develop cutting-edge technologies with global leaders.
