One of the EBCTs in the Know Hub Chile portfolio and a winning team of Desafío Avante 2020 will carry out public and private sector projects in that country, which has a marine territory of 700,000 km2.

Piracy, illegal fishing, illegal migration, smuggling and the transport of illicit substances are some of the crimes that can take place at sea. All of them endanger human life, navigation and countries’ maritime safety and security, as well as posing a threat of pollution to the coastal marine environment.
InnerCore.ai, one of the science-based startups (EBCTs) in the Know Hub Chile portfolio and a winning team of Desafío Avante 2020, developed a platform built around a data processing core that allows it to be used in different applications. It provides a technological solution to this problem by making it possible to monitor illicit activities using artificial intelligence and thus detect anomalous events at sea.
The technology developed by InnerCore.ai is expanding internationally and will begin to be implemented in Ecuador, a country with a marine territory covering 700,000 km2. Ecuador’s maritime territory is 5.38 times its land territory, so carrying out surveillance, control and neutralization of illicit activities in that space requires substantial material and human resources, a problem the EBCT will help address.
Collaboration in the public and private sectors
The EBCT received a request from the Ecuadorian consulting firm Asimar to develop a project applying artificial intelligence to monitoring illicit activities off the coast of Ecuador, a request that came directly from Ecuador’s Undersecretariat of Fisheries.

Sergio Vera, executive director of InnerCore.ai, explains that the initiative seeks to “detect illegal fishing off the coast of Ecuador and, importantly, in the Galápagos reserve.”
That project, however, is not the only one. The company was also approached by one of the most important fishermen’s federations in that country, which brings together some 10,000 vessels, to design a device that collects vessel navigation data and then displays it in a control center. The aim, Vera says, is to verify the safety of its members at sea and their compliance with regulations.
“We also held meetings with Ecuador’s coast guard and maritime authorities to show the applications of our system in identifying illicit activities at sea using artificial intelligence,” says the executive director of InnerCore.ai, adding that all the projects that will begin in Ecuador represent “a consolidation of the development and the start of an international expansion.”
